The second W-SPES workshop was held at the prestigious, award-winning Magna Centre close to Sheffield in South Yorkshire, UK on 31st January 2008. The intention of the workshop was to start the “mainstreaming” of eIdentity and electronic signatures into the work of public administrations.
A wide range of applications were demonstrated with the intention of clarifying in the minds of the attendees, just how useful these technologies could be for them.
The intention was also to establish the mechanism by which the work of W-SPES could be continued and involve a wider group of interested parties, to finally overcome the problem of “no applications needing them and so no need for electronic signatures…. and conversely …no electronic signatures so no applications!”
This culminated in the establishment of “SPES Cities” as an organisation dedicated to completing the work started.
The event was well attended and had representatives from eight EU countries as well as from several Asian countries.
The workshop was one of the first to be given EU “epractice” accreditation and was thus supported in its dissemination efforts by that initiative, as well as through other websites such as eForum, and naturally, the websites of the projects which were invited to contribute to the event.
